The first few months with a puppy shape the dog it becomes. The good news: you don't need harsh methods to raise a well-behaved dog. Gentle, reward-based training is more effective, builds trust, and is genuinely enjoyable for both of you. Here are five things you can start at home today.

1. Reward the behaviour you want to see

Dogs repeat what gets rewarded. When your puppy sits, comes when called, or settles quietly, mark it instantly with a warm "yes!" and a small treat or praise. The timing matters โ€” reward within a second or two so your puppy connects the reward to the exact action.

2. Keep sessions short and fun

A puppy's attention span is tiny. Five short sessions of two to three minutes across the day beat one long, frustrating session. End every session on a win โ€” a command your puppy already knows โ€” so it always finishes feeling successful.

Little and often wins. Three good minutes beats twenty tiring ones.

3. Start socialisation early and gently

Between roughly 8 and 16 weeks, puppies are most open to new experiences. Calmly introduce yours to different people, gentle dogs, household sounds, car rides, and the bustle of a Hyderabad street. Positive early exposure now prevents fear and reactivity later. Always keep it low-pressure and let your puppy retreat if overwhelmed.

4. Be consistent with words and rules

If "down" means lie down for you but get off the sofa for someone else, your puppy gets confused. Agree on a single word for each command across the whole family, and be consistent about house rules from day one โ€” it's far easier than un-teaching a habit later.

5. Never punish with fear or pain

Shouting, hitting, or rubbing a puppy's nose in a mess doesn't teach โ€” it creates anxiety and erodes trust. If your puppy does something unwanted, redirect it to the right behaviour and reward that instead. Prevention and redirection work; fear doesn't.

When to bring in a professional

Home training handles the basics beautifully, but some situations benefit from expert help โ€” persistent problems like excessive barking, leash pulling, separation anxiety, or aggression, or simply if you'd like structured guidance from the start. A good trainer tailors a plan to your dog and coaches you as much as your puppy.

At Saara Pets, our reward-based training programs cover basic obedience, advanced commands and specific behaviour issues for both puppies and adult dogs โ€” all in a calm, positive environment right here in Bandlaguda.
